Investigation of Flow-Related Defects in Thin-Slab Casting

This project is an experimental study of CSP casting technology to understand the effects of metal level fluctuations and meniscus steel velocity on phenomena at the metal/molten flux interface. Of particular interest is a novel method to calculate the meniscus velocity from nailboard measurements. When evaluated together with transient plant measurements, this method will provide a simple, inexpensive, and physically robust tool to predict and control mold slag entrainment, which is perhaps the most detrimental defect in high quality sheet steel.
